So, being as I am not a crazy old man by name of David Eddings (sir, please don't set anything else on fire by accident, and definitely don't proceed to be smoking in the photograph of you talking to the fireman...sigh), I didn't actually name Martel myself. However! I'll comment on it anyway; as a Latin name, Martel means 'Warring', and as a German name it means 'Warrior of Mars'. This is a significant difference, obviously - I do find the name very appropriate.
In canon, Martel is often and largely defined by his opposition; his inability to back down from mistakes he knows he's made puts him consistently at odds, even with himself. There is no one on Martel's side, alternately because Martel's side is retarded and because he deeply, violently loathes all of the people he proceeds to surround himself with. This doesn't stop him going to war with the world, just like Zalasta wants him to. He's a knight, and then he's a sorcerer, and then he's a goddamn mercenary and his driving motivations are love that's been twisted into something horrific and anger.
So. Warring. Yeah.

I used to play in and co-mod a game called [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]; while I was there, I played an adapted version of Martel for the game; his name was Aloysius Martel. The reasons for this name were twofold! Since I intended for him to go by his surname, he needed a name that would be so ridiculous a teenage boy would pointblank refuse to answer to it: Argentine-American Aloysius (enjoy my alliteration) was named after the teddy-bear belonging to Lord Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited, because his father was a big ol' Waugh fan. You can see immediately why he might've had a problem with his given name.
The second reason is the meaning of the name, like the name he's given in canon; a male Teutonic name, Aloysius means 'famous in war'. In French, it's a variant of Louis, 'famous warrior' from the Old German 'Chlodovech'. (It's also a good old Roman Catholic name, thanks to St Aloysius of Gonzaga; once a knight of the Elene Church, a young Aloysius Martel was naturally a devout Catholic.)
His username, for the record, was "sebastiansbear".

Martel's username is a play on words:
A knight-errant (plural: knights-errant) is a figure of medieval chivalric romance literature. "Errant," meaning wandering or roving, indicates how the knight-errant would typically wander the land in search of adventures to prove himself as a knight, such as in a pas d'Armes.
(wikipedia)
er⋅rant
–adjective
1. deviating from the regular or proper course; erring; straying.
(dictionary.reference.com)
So Martel, as a former knight, who strayed...yeah, it's not actually funny, how about that.
(He's also been referred to in the course of roleplay as a 'felonious monk' and was at one point kidnapped by a truly bizarre group of people as that item in a multiversal treasure hunt. He tolerated this because he knew one of them, nobody tried to disarm him, and they provided food and booze - not to mention cheap entertainment. The more you know!
More trivia: Martel's wife, Candice Monaghan, has a nickname for him that the full version of translates from the Spanish to 'knight errant'. He was...not entirely amused when he found out what it means.)

Gelsey Oldman, an OC that I should be working on but may never finish, is named this because I was frustrated while trying to settle on something and said in an IM 'Just because I hate naming things doesn't mean I can just name her Gary Oldman and call it a day' and a bit of enabling later I picked out a different G--y name.
Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez (but you can call him Shean Connery) speaks for himself. Gates Enfys Keel, a Buffyverse Slayer OC, also answers to 'Lazenby' and 'Princess Sparkle'. Caius Roy was very nearly named Julian Cesar because I really hate naming things (but he lucked out, partially because 'Caius Roy' is a fantastic name and partially because 'Julian Cesar' is too obvious even for me).
