part i.

Character name: Martel
Fandom: The Elenium
Species: Human
Character powers: Martel is an expertly trained and notably powerful sorcerer - I would consider referring to him as a combat sorcerer, due to the nature of his training (sorcery went hand-in-hand with his knighthood, as an edge in conflict of various kinds, including but not limited to battle, torture interrogation, sneaking around fucking things up, etc), but he dove headfirst into the secrets of Styricum with a will and his repertoire is much more broad than that. He is, in theory, capable of devising new uses for it through trial and error and terrible, brilliant ideas.

Sorcery goes hand in hand with religion, also, when one starts out as a church knight. Styricum teaches a type of magic that is essentially a form of prayer - to simplify, ritualized prayer (incantations, specific hand-wavery, namely) is the equivalent of reaching out to hold hands with a god who will then assist in channeling power to achieve their ends. Martel variously worked through the goddess Aphrael and the elder god Azash. Due to the nature of this magic, which involves both the sorcerer's own power/ability and a god's, part of the way it works is through an intrinsic connection to the holy. Feeling the presence of a god in one's spirit is not just a metaphor for this guy!

As a note, this means that when he at one point had the most significant of his abilities taken from him, what must be being discussed there is ripping out parts of his soul, at the very least severely scarring them. (He would already have been fairly tainted by the magic he was using prior, and I refer you again to the effect this should have had on his sanity, e.g. 'destroyed it completely'. Some of the forbidden magic he used is the sort that gods are afraid of.) And then having it hatchet-job patched by Azash, who tends to have more of a chokehold on the throat of anyone in his influence. Martel suffered psychological and spiritual scarring as a result, although far less than he should have.

As the Delphae have proved, the style of magic used in their world does not require a god, and in Bete Noire, Martel - sick to death of religion in almost all of its forms, and profoundly bitter about what he perceived to be spiritual abandonment - devoted himself to a trial-and-error study of how exactly to master sorcery without the guiding hand of a god. He was successful, but now is in the process of mastering this new discipline; handling his own power with no checks but himself is new and he's cautious, if not (perhaps) as cautious as some would prefer him to be.

part ii.
1.) Is it acceptable for your character to be mind-controlled or persuaded? How susceptible are they to mind control, hynotism, or suggestion?
Martel is not especially susceptible to this - it's not impossible, but he's strong-willed and very experienced with what that's like. While this does mean that it could conceivably be easier for a sufficiently powerful individual to grasp control (there's already sort of established mental scarring that could be reinvigorated for new purpose), the last being to control Martel this way was a god and short of that he's probably going to be able to throw it off and react badly.

2.) Is it acceptable for your character to have their mind read? Does this include traumatic memories? What is their mind like (disturbing, orderly, joyful, surprisingly empty, etc.)? If the character has psychic walls or preventative measures against psychic interference, please explain.
Yes indeed it is! He's also capable of ejecting an unwanted presence from his mind, provided they aren't more powerful than he is, and following them back to their own; a function of sorcery is the ability to explore with one's own mind. He will, more than likely, be aware of any intrusion. His response depends on its nature.
His mind is probably a pretty disturbing place to be, frankly; beyond the simple fact that he is not a very nice man (he has the potential to be good - even great - man, but he will never be nice), there's also the aforementioned mental scarring and, indeed, the psychic, spiritual scarring of the forbidden magic that he practised for so long. Martel is tainted, and though he's recovering from it, it will always leave a mark on him. He has a great many memories of profoundly disturbing and horrific acts that he both committed and witnessed; these memories are marked by self-hatred, repugnance for his choices and condescending, irritable disdain for the companions he had during this time. He's bitter and desperately lonely, and he has some weird psychic scarring from where he once had his ability to practise magic (and commune with the divine) ripped from him and then haphazardly shoved back in. A telepath is unlikely to enjoy the experience of messing with his mind, and frankly, that's the likeliest reason he might let them do it. He knows it's not pretty in there, that's what you jerks get for looking.

3.) Are thoughts mentioned in narration acceptable for a telepath to pick up?
Yes, provided we've discussed it beforehand.

4.) What about emotions, in the case of an empath? What sort of general emotional reading would such a character receive from yours?
The general likely constants are a subtle, constant self-loathing (he has a bleak sense of humour, but it's probably telling that he'll even crack a joke where his death is the punchline), a certain sense of resignation, and a propensity to dry amusement at the world in general. Otherwise, his emotions are fairly dramatically intense and will come up in a scene as relevant. He's capable of astonishing subtlety - and is often making use of it, these days - but it's imperfect as a result of the damage he's done to himself, and sometimes he'll lose his control and his emotions will be pretty evident.

5.) Are there any aspects of your character's mind, emotions, or memories you would like to be picked up, mentioned, or used in character? Conversely, is there anything that should not be noticed, or at least never mentioned?
As long as we've discussed it, you can pretty much go wild; it's not like he doesn't deserve it.

part iii.
1.) Physically speaking, what stands out about your character? Imposing size? Physical scarring? Tattoos?
Martel is 6'3" and broad, leanly muscular and built to wear plate metal armour, as he's done for more or less his entire adult life. Dude is strong, is what I'm saying here. He has dark eyes that appear black at a glance, and might be in his late thirties or early forties, though he's ageing pretty well, presumably because evil is sexy. He has numerous scars from his long, storied life, but the most dramatic when he's got his shirt off is where a broadsword went into his chest and clear through him; it is, to even a layperson, not the kind of injury he could have survived. Probably because he didn't, in fact, survive it.

2.) Is your character immune to any of the following: poisons, chemical agents, telekinetic influence, radiation, or types of illnesses?
No.

3.) Is your character physiologically different from a human in any way? This can include their blood, skin, hair, etcetera being made up of something unusual or simply differing in construction and durability.
Not really. It is implied/suggested by canon that ultimately all human beings of his world are progressing toward divinity (the Delphae are the example here, as mentioned above), but while he has mastered the ability to practise sorcery without being handheld by a god, he is most assuredly not one himself.

4.) Are you amenable to having your character be harmed in any way? How far are you comfortable with injury to you character going? Does this include being fed on by vampires, willingly or unwillingly?
I am willing to get him fucked up! He's already died once before, though, so let's not do that.

5.) Is it acceptable for other characters with abilities of shapeshifting or disguise to imitate your character? Does this include ability mimicry?
Yes. Ability mimicry probably depends.

part iv.
1.) Can your character's presence or aura be noticed by other characters, and how would it look/feel to them? How would it manifest to a character with no supernatural abilities, if at all?
A character without supernatural abilities wouldn't notice anything unusual about him; characters with the ability to pick up on these kind of things may notice that he's died (though he is presently alive), that he's a pretty powerful sorcerer, and that there is a lingering taint on him that's slowly dissipating into a kind of spiritual scar.

2.) Can your character be affected by magic spells and curses?
He can, and he can respond in kind.

3.) Can your character be affected by sin and corruption, and be tempted toward expressing their darker urges (of whatever flavor)?
Oh good gracious me yes.

4. What sort of sins is the character prone toward, and how might they best be tempted, if you are interested in such an event?
Pride is the big one.

5.) Are you amenable to the character receiving prophetic visions, including as part of a plot?
I am!

part v.
1. Is threadjacking allowed? Under what circumstances?
Yes, but not long, long threads my character can't see or respond to.

2. Is it acceptable for canonmates that are updated further than yours to inform your character of events yours has not yet experienced?
Yes. I bet that would go well, if it ever came up.

3. Are there triggering or upsetting topics you would like other characters to avoid mentioning to yours for the sake of continued comfort (racist words, homophobia, self-injury, etc.)?
OOCly, I am fine as long as you're clearly not endorsing the offensive ideas/opinions/concepts in your writing (if something does become an issue for me, I'll discuss it with you); ICly, Martel doesn't like abusers, rapists, racists, witch-hunters or people he finds irritatingly obtuse or slow. (It's one thing to be not as smart as he is, and he has a certain amount of patience with that, but the man doesn't suffer fools well. Or at all.)

4. Are there any additions you would like us to make to this survey?
Nope, I'm good.
