[log] one of us was exiled and the one who wasn't's you

[23:46] * Martel spends a good amount of time in the nexus, generally, and lately he's taken to spending an hour or so in the evenings - just in case. He's /always/ got something to work on, though, and tonight is no different.
[23:49] * Candice arrives in a sweater and jeans today, wouldn't Sir Martel be proud. She stops in her tracks, wide-eyed. "Um, hi." A new person!
[23:50] * Martel is already looking up when she comes in properly, with a slightly resigned expression she might almost recognize. "Oh, she was /serious/," he says, half to himself. He knows perfectly well Candice was serious, he's just...like this.
[23:51] Candice: "What." :|
[23:51] Martel: "Never mind. Hello, there."
[23:52] Candice: "Um. Hi. ...youuuu look familiar."
[23:52] Martel: "Martel," he introduces himself, almost lazily, "Lord of Valdis."
[23:53] Candice: "Ohhhhhh my God what is my life." She throws herself into a chair.
[23:53] Martel: "Welcome to the nexus. Do I here assume my reputation's preceded me?"
[23:55] Candice: "Um. I think I know...a version. Of you."
[23:56] Martel: "You're her, then," he says, scrutinizing her briefly.
[23:57] Candice: "...my reputation has preceded /me/. And here I didn't even know I had one. Hi, I'm Candice. Chavez," she adds, "I guess you don't do the surname thing."
[23:59] * Martel files away the different surname, inclining his head. "No, I don't. I wouldn't worry about your 'reputation'."
[00:00] Candice: "So you heard about me and tiny you, huh. He mentioned meeting your--wife?"
[00:01] Martel: "My wife, yes." They're not married yet, actually, but that hasn't stopped him telling the Arums that they are. And most everyone else. "She startled him, did she?" Martel's watching to see what she makes of all this.
[00:02] Candice: "Yes. And..." She fusses with her hair. "He's kind of upset in a way, about...well, what you did. I don't want him to go that route."
[00:02] Martel: "I suspect he only got the bare bones of 'what I did'," Martel reflects, "and I can see how it'd upset him. No, my dear, nobody wants him to."
[00:05] Candice: "I'm trying to keep him...you know, to what he's doing instead. But he doesn't really want me in his life."
[00:07] * Martel puts his notes aside, for now. "A relationship with him would effectively make you his mistress," he says, in that conversational tone his younger self's been known to adopt to be an ass in, "and it might not sit well."
[00:08] Candice: "/Mistress/--" She considers that, frowning. "He doesn't want that. I don't--I don't think I'd care, I don't put that much stock in marriage, sorry." That's her mother's influence; her mother who will never marry and has never needed any man.
[00:09] Martel: "Let me tell you a secret," he says, amused, "neither does he."
[00:11] * Candice looks puzzled. "Okay?"
[00:19] * Martel doesn't laugh. "It's a means of demanding the world's acknowledgement - that people see what belongs to me. Or to him, as it were." Look, Martel just doesn't want another of his alternates to end up with a Maria.
[00:21] Candice: "And if he couldn't marry me, he couldn't make the world acknowledge that I'd be his? I didn't know he was--possessive." But she might have guessed, maybe.
[00:22] * Martel gives her a look that roughly translates to 'then pay closer attention, it's not like we're subtle'. "And you could leave him," he allows the addition.
[00:22] * Martel is put so on edge by this. Why must teenagers...exist.
[00:25] * Candice is not sorry she exists, Martel. "I'd hope he'd trust me not to do that."
[00:26] * Martel makes a noncommittal noise. "Perhaps."
[00:27] Candice: "So basically you--and he--are telling me I should just back off the /only guy/ I've really ever liked because he lives in a different world." :( This sucks.
[00:27] Martel: "Good God, no," Martel says, mildly. "If another of my fucking alternates knocks up Maria Khirdaji, I'm going to strangle all of them, and he'd only make Petrana miserable."
[00:28] Candice: "Petrana. What. I--so...you're saying I /should/?"
[00:30] Martel: "I'm not going to advise a child on how best to seduce my alternate," he says, carefully, "because this is an unpleasant enough encounter as is. I know for a fact you and he are well-suited - but he hides it better, now. The way his mind works. He's not /safe/, do you understand?"
[00:31] Candice: "...I know," she admits, because she does. "I see it sometimes."
[00:33] Martel: "He could hurt you very severely." Martel feels so bizarre right now, you cannot possibly understand.
[00:34] Candice: "I know. I don't--it's worth it."
[00:38] Martel: "Is it worth your family, or being taken down with him if he goes the way I did?"
[00:39] * Martel asks this in the 'casually interested' way that is not, actually, casual at all.
[00:40] * Candice is careful. "I don't have any family--just my mom. And...look, I don't /know/ him well enough, but--if he wanted me with him, I'd go."
[00:42] Martel: "You said Chavez earlier," he recalls, and then shakes his head. "Maryani's the exception to the rule, she's out of her sodding mind, but it's not a good idea to go with him. I'm not telling you to do /anything/, but...be aware, there." Does this qualify toward being kind to people, Aphrael? :|
[00:44] Candice: "I'm gonna do my best to keep him from going that way entirely," she says, firmly, "But...I appreciate the warning." She bites her lip. "Do you think he does like me? Without having met him."
[00:44] Martel: "Presuming he's not somehow the idiot alternate. I'm sure one must exist."
[00:45] * Candice laughs a little. "Okay. He just--sometimes he jerks away when I touch him."
[00:45] * Martel starts laughing, very quietly.
[00:46] Candice: ".......what."
[00:47] Martel: "He likes you fine."
[00:47] * Martel thinks this is hysterical, Candice.
[00:47] Candice: "How can you tell from /that/? Is he always going to do that even if I get him to come around?" She actually flails.
[00:48] Martel: "Has he done anything other than that? -I don't want you to tell me what." This is probably a giveaway as to what he means by that.
[00:48] Candice: ".............um. Well, if I--initiate, yeah." So awkward.
[00:48] * Martel is somewhere between genuinely entertained and genuinely distressed.
[00:49] * Candice is so embarrassed she may actually die, ftr.
[00:50] Martel: "It's a matter of his self-control and understanding of himself vs. your..." He sighs. "I'm too sober for this conversation, Miss Chavez. I really ought to get back to my wife." He's going to drink until he can't even remember she HAD an adolescence.
[00:51] Candice: "Yes, uh. I'm going to...go. It was nice meeting you, but also supremely awkward. Bye." OH GOD that was terrible.
