maria. Maria was the first person that Martel met in the nexus, as I recall! Definitely she was the first friend he made, out of um...not many, because he is not the world's most friendly and sociable guy. (At all.) She inspires a weirdly paternal reaction in him -- babbies having babbies, o my -- and he's very fond of her, for assorted reasons including how much she reminds him of both Sephrenia and Aphrael by turns. She makes him worry more than he admits to, and he's grateful to her for a bunch of things but partially for being a reason he can point to for staying the path now. (He doesn't exactly lack for reasons, he just lacks for ... sanity.) He's happy to have her stay at the castle as long as/whenever she likes, also, which is partially because she is his bff and partially because with all the space they could coexist for months without really crossing paths if they didn't want to, so it's not as though it's a huge put out. He enjoys their weird conversations and finds the fact that they appear to be the only set of Martels and Marias not boning approximately as hilarious as the others find the opposite.
candice. Martel's...obviously crazy attracted to Candice, and has been since shortly after they met. He didn't, as discussed, expect it to ever go anywhere (for reasons that revolve around assorted things namely differences in their respective worlds and eras and also why), so underneath his 'well of course I'm irresistible *ego*' he's perpetually surprised that it did. He's taking it two steps forward, one step back a lot of the time -- for every time he gets closer to her there's another where he holds off, which she's probably noticed. He hasn't had much in the way of adult relationships that were remotely sane or healthy any more -- he was extraordinarily fond of Petra (theirs was a pretty good relationship that probably would've gone somewhere awesome, but didn't) but never wholly in love with her, besides, so that's a depth of feeling he doesn't have experience with and is slightly intimidated by. The discussion of marriage is weighing on him a little because he does tend to view everything in his life with an eye to permanence--it's his tendency and he put it aside in large parts when he lost everything and decided to wreak vengeance and havoc on the world, but things have changed and he's trying to realign with the changes. ANYWAY. Pretty much everything about Candice fascinates him, on a personal level and the things about her world that he can learn from her, and their rapport is great. Occasionally the fact neither of them really have a clue what they're doing and conversations get frustrated picks at his temper.
Grif is an interesting kind of dude, Martel feels; the laid back attitude and implied competence appeal to him, since he personally can be as much of a diva as any teenage drama queen so it's not a bad thing to have people around who are just like 'wtfever, man'. (Puts things in perspective sometimes.) If Martel had known Ulath, then he'd probably make a comparison or seven. He's pretty interested in Grif's armor -- intellectually, rather than as a possibility for himself, it's too weird for him to actually want, but weaponry will never get less interesting. Also, he wants to learn how to use a gun and theoretically at some point could discuss that with Grif, which I'm sure Sparhawk would think is a great idea. (No.) (He'd be more than happy to give Grif lessons with a sword, besides; he'll have training areas in his castle due to his intention of providing instruction for the Arum clan he lives near.) The fact Grif is at least peripherally aware of the fact Martel's past is made of crazy and seems willing to judge him on his present merits and faults rather than previous ones is also a point in favor for future conversation.
Grif would not recommend the experience necessary for getting MJOLNIR to anyone. In addition to being too weird for Martel, it's just plain too fucking painful for just about anyone to deserve being subjected to it, in his opinion.
That said, he would indeed be down for trading gun skills for sword skills. (Grif does actually know a little bit of sword stuff -- presumably included in his training on the off chance of ever being handed a Covenant energy sword, for all the good that does when the things are almost impossibly rare -- and has been teaching the Senshi what of it he knows, but it's mostly some very unsubtle "3 ways each to slash and stab." In a sword fight where all factors other than skill were equal, Martel would kick his ass. Improvement would thus be appreciated, and suggestions on actually getting a sufficiently quality sword.)
And yeah, having hung out in the Nexus as long as he has, Grif's become familiar with how the Nexus tends to offer a second chance, particularly having gotten one himself. He's also well aware that pretty much everyone comes from one form of crazy or another, so the important part is what you do with that second chance.
